“Changing the Narrative” 3 WED FEB. 18TH Multi-media Open Mic Event North Portland Public Library 512 North Killingsworth street 5:30-7pm Hosted by Desi Casanova 3rd instalment of monthly series info/contact: media4hijack@gmail.com FEATURED ARTIST ZAE https://www.instagram.com/its_zaes_social/ For the release of the single “Feng Shui” A musician, singer, rapper, producer, and host of the weekly series open mic jamz at Cafe united, Zae is a self professed “jack of all trades” and we profess, he gives us hope for the next generation. Oozing positive energy, musical talent, and the demeanor of a natural leader, he brings both a powerful musical contribution, but a sense of joy to each event he’s hopped on with the Media Hijack crew. However, above all, you know your old friend and collaborator, G”Odd, loves nothing more than a good song. Feng Shui, has been on repeat in my brain for a few days, and I can’t get enough. This is a hit, this is a rock star, come get some while you can. And Kxmikvzi (kä-mi-ˈkä-zē ) https://linktr.ee/kxmikvzi888 https://www.instagram.com/kxmikvzi888/ You can call her Kazi. It’s probably for the best because most of her nicknames are too shocking for this forum. Kazi is the prototype for a new generation of bad-ass women who are a dominant demographic in the Portland rap underground. She has been a stand out on regular events like Late Lyrics, but she’s now easiest found down at the Open Mic Jamz on Sundays. Her sets give the vibe of someone sincere about honing the craft, and it gives the feeling that she is building towards her full potential. In mainstream rap, some women fought back on misogyny by essentially talking like their male counterparts. Nothing like that here. Kazi will kick you in the crotch and steal your girlfriend. That’s as nice as it’ll get if you don’t behave. Changing the Narrative and The North Portland Public Library Open Mix and Jam Night A unique open mic event that is dedicated to networking and information exchange, collaboration that yields concrete results and a philosophy for artists to place their creative spirit and the focal point of their existence. Each event is to include a topic to explore, a spotlight on some aspect of community, a video component, visual art displays and a variety of featured artists. The event also is intended to sound an alarm announcing the role that public libraries are taking on in underground music and arts across the country. With Portland libraries beginning to introduce a host of events, workshops and classes on creative topics, and introducing the “library of things” concept, d.i.y. artists of all kinds need to look into the available options. “Changing the Narrative” shares producers with “Portland Cable Access Hijack” a cable access tv program that takes a “network within a network” concept, airing multiple programs within their weekly tv slot. This includes a sort of talk show style, arts and culture review that features local creative types and their activities. They have been doing a series of features called “Open the Mic Up” visiting open mic events around the city, and are able to help direct artists to more open mic opportunities. The host, Desi Casanova is a local spoken word performer and visual artist, who began doing live shows this past year. linktr.ee/media4hijack Changing the Narrative: https://media4hijack.wixsite.com/media4hijack/changingthenarrative Desi: https://media4hijack.wixsite.com/desi Portland Cable Access Hijack: https://media4hijack.wixsite.com/media4hijack North Portland Library: https://multcolib.org/hours-and-locations/north-portland-library Promotion and information: oddisheagency@gmail.com

Braddah Joe

bjoe pics.png

Braddah Joe describes himself as a “gay rapper” and karaoke dj, but that seems like a bit of an oversimplification. He crafts nuanced stories regarding his experience as a gay man, in the context of a genre that often trends towards hyper faux masculine. Performing to a range of crowd types, he shows no fear or hesitation, and I ‘ve never seen him back-down. He is a staple of the open mic scene and we’ve shared stages at Psanctum Thrift, 503 Records, Late Lyrics, Alberta Abbey…damn near everywhere. A pleasure welcoming him to the Library cuz he is really going to mess up the narrative.
