53 Years of Hip Hop August 11, 1973 is universally recognized as the birthday of Hip Hop All, around the country, and the world events will be held throughout the month of August to celebrate this landmark day. For those of us existing in a fringe element of this now sprawling genre, these celebrations, to be fair…like almost every aspect of society, do not include a space for us. All respect is offered to those who have labored in this art form who are recognized, to those who use this as a time to celebrate their accomplishments and those of their peers, and to those who seek or offer sponsorships to get all manner of projects happening. I can give admiration and congratulations, but have nothing that would be welcomed as a contribution. I will focus on one little corner of the universe, where a community brought together with love for the music and the curse/blessing of the outsiders perspective have been building something increasingly exciting here in Portland. I’ve done my best to document as many little snippets as I can with my cable access tv show and the project Media Hijack. With this said, me and my Secret Society of freak friends have some plans for the month of August. Happy birthday to hip hop and love to those who celebrate the occasion. -G’Odd
